Position Description and Duties: Harper College is currently accepting applications for Electronic Resources and Technology Librarian, a full-time tenure track faculty position. 

The Harper College Library includes 6 full-time faculty who oversee and maintain Library services.  The Library is the academic hub of the campus and serves 27 communities in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and more than 13,000 students in a wide variety of transfer and career programs. 

The Electronic Resources and Technology Librarian (ERTL) is responsible for administering the Library’s web presence and managing the life cycle of electronic resources, including journals, databases, and e-books. The ERTL also supervises the operation of the Library Makerspace and acts as point person for Libguide development and maintenance. Finally, the ERTL will serve as a leader in exploration, identification, implementation, and evaluation of new technologies and their use in the library setting. 

Responsibilities of this position include: 

  • Coordinate and maintain the Library’s Web presence 

  • Ensure user-friendly and intuitive access to online Library resources and services 

  • Assist with Library social media and promotion of electronic resources 

  • Ensure Digital Accessibility of Library Resources 

  • Manage the life cycle of electronic resources, including databases, e-books, streaming video, and serials 

  • Establish relationships with vendors, publishers, and consortia in order to proactively address ordering, access, payment, and performance issues 

  • Take the lead in training and development of workflow, policies, procedures and documentation for e-resource management processes and systems managed by the unit 

  • Coordinate the activities needed to support user access and discovery to e-resources

  • Identify, evaluate, and stay current with emerging trends, resources, practices and standards in electronic resource management, usage statistics, data management, access, and discovery to enhance library services 

  • Research and analyze products and offers, set up product trials, coordinate electronic subscription changes and renewals 

  • Gather, interpret, and report statistics for electronic resources 

  • Manage license agreements 

  • Develop consistent look and feel for Libguides 

  • Act as a resource person for Libguide development 

  • Ensure currency and relevance of Libguides 

  • Maintain database page 

  • Coordinate and manage the day-to-day operations of the MakeShop; provide support for staff to meet departmental goals and objectives 

  • Ensure all equipment and machinery are maintained, up-to-date, and being operated safely 

  • Oversee programming the ordering and receiving of supplies 

  • Act as first point of contact for IT department, including user authentication, technology upgrades, installation, etc. 

  • Troubleshoot minor technology issues 

  • Provide reference services 

  • Engage in teaching activities including Classroom instruction, Research Guides creation and maintenance, tutorials, OER and other learning objects  

  • Purchase, deselect, and analyze the overall collection strength for the areas where assigned  

  • Serve as library liaison to appropriate divisions 

  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Dean 

Educational Requirements:  Minimum of a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.

Experience Requirements: 

  • Strong customer service attitude, as well as a positive, proactive approach to problem solving 

  • Working knowledge of integrated library systems 

  • Ability to adapt to change; to plan, implement and assess projects 

  • Working knowledge of CSS and HTML  


  • Working knowledge of metadata standards and best practices 

  • Experience working with e-resources in a consortium or shared environment 

  • Working knowledge of digital tools, standards and initiatives, such as ONIX, SUSHI, Open URL, KBART and COUNTER 

  • Prior experience with Alma and Primo (Ex Libris) 

  • Working knowledge of user design/end user experience 

  • Experience developing instructional support materials (e.g., research guides, video tutorials, etc.)
