Duties of Position: The Communications Manager will play an integral role in executing the college’s storytelling, digital communication and reputation management strategies. This role is chiefly responsible for writing and producing a variety of content for traditional and new media. The Communications Manager will work closely with the Director of Communications to ensure frequent and positive coverage about the college in local and national media. This position will also collaborate with the communications team, the Advancement Division and departments across campus to develop and execute messaging, content and public relations initiatives to showcase the best of the college and connect meaningfully with external and internal stakeholders.

Writes articles, profiles, news releases, social posts and other content for both internal and external audiences. Must have the ability to successfully edit others’ work and have superior command of AP style and the college’s editorial style. Maintains an editorial calendar and ensures editorial quality.

Develops, repurposes and reimagines content for a variety of digital and new media platforms and provides strategic consultation on their research and implementation. Incorporates visual, graphic and multimedia content into college’s storytelling campaigns.


Develops and manages a comprehensive media relations program to publicize and promote the college to district residents and stakeholders aligned with the college's strategic goals. Works closely with director ensure frequent and positive coverage about the college in local and national media. Collaborates with Marketing Services to pursue paid advertorial opportunities.


Serves as a college spokesperson and acts as the college's primary spokesperson and media advisor to the college president and senior leadership in the absence of the director. Works closely with faculty and staff to proactively elicit story ideas and prepare employees and students for media opportunities.


Develops crisis communications and strategic public relations plans. Serves on the college’s crisis communications team as a public information officer.


Collaborates with the internal communication manager to ensure employee messages align with institutional messaging. Creates and manages content for employee-focused channels including e-newsletter and intranet. Supports implementation of internal presentations and events, including logistics and content, such as all-campus meetings and town halls.


Collaborates with student communication manager to support communication strategies and campaigns to increase student engagement, awareness and enrollment. Creates and manages content for student communication vehicles including digital signage and website.


Develops and manages the News Bureau and other webpages in coordination with Marketing Services.


Tracks and analyzes media coverage about the college and maintains an extensive media list.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising or related field.

Experience Requirements: Minimum five years of word professional writing experience required. Strong connections to Chicago-area media highly desirable. Previous reporting experience in the Chicago-area preferred. Must have experience establishing organization-wide communication strategies. Must have excellent interpersonal and communications skills with an ability to be a clear, persuasive and effective advocate for the college. Must be inventive, strategic, organized, a team player and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
