What is The Make Shop?

The Make Shop supports innovation, creation, and expression by providing access to artistic tools and exposure to new ideas. The space is intended for collaboration and engagement with Harper students, employees, and community members. It allows makers and inventors to take part in the entire creative process of imagining, building, and utilizing an object, or in learning a new skill. In The Make Shop, individuals have the freedom to experiment and to learn by thinking critically and by becoming problem-solvers. Do-it-yourself activities such as engraving, sewing, and 3D printing are encouraged.

The Make Shop’s goal is for users to take what they’ve learned to transform and enrich their lives here at Harper College and beyond.

Duties of Position:

Assists with preparing for The Make Shop events and programs.

Provides basic troubleshooting for The Make Shop machines.

Provides information to patrons who use The Make Shop, and makes necessary referrals.

Assists patrons, as needed.

Assists in maintaining The Make Shop.

Assists with outreach tables and programming.

Basic customer service.

Checks materials in and out.

Perform related duties, as assigned.

Education Requirements: In order to apply for this position, you must be a current Harper College student, enrolled in at least six credits per semester (three for summer).

Experience Preferences: Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure. Familiarity with graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, GIMP, and Inkscape. Student will be expected to learn how to use the following machines: Silhouette Cameo vinyl cutter, Cricut cutting machine, Apache laminator, and sewing machines (Brother CS6000i, Brother 1034DX, Addi Express knitting machines).

Schedule Information: Will determine schedule based on student's availability.

Maximum hours per week: 20 hours
