Work Conditions: Work is primarily indoor and sedentary in nature, but may require outdoor assignments at some Athletics event. Some weekend and evening hours will be required.
Duties of Position: Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics and Fitness, the Sports Communications Assistant will handle coverage of intercollegiate sports, using the website, press releases, social media channels and photos and video to promote Harper College’s Athletics Program to district residents and external stakeholders. Candidates must have evening and weekend time available for actual attendance of games as necessary.
Produces editorial content regarding the Athletic Program for news releases, the website, media guides and other projects as assigned. Works closely with the Athletics Department, coaches and student-athletes to solicit positive enterprise stories.
Conducts interviews with coaches and student-athletes and pitches stories to print, online and broadcast media. Assists in maintaining a database of relevant online, print and broadcast media outlets that may be used to specifically promote athletics.
Coordinates media credentials for assigned sports and arranges interviews with coaches and athletes as necessary.
Maintains statistical information for assigned sports. Uploads the statistical information to the NJCAA and Harper Hawks websites. Assists coaches in preparing regional and national nominations.
Attends assigned athletic events.
Under the direction of the Media Relations Manager, implements public relations and media relations projects aimed at promoting attendance at Harper athletic events and enhancing spectator participation.
Assists with daily maintenance of the Athletics Program website. Maintains updated win/loss records; conference, regional and national standings; and event recaps.
Coordinates preseason photo shots for teams and writes player bios for website.
Creates Athletics Program content for college social media channels.
Shoots photos for posting to the website and social media channels and for use in media pitches.
Shoots and edits original video content, including coach and athlete interviews, for posting to the website and social media channels, and for use in media pitches. Implements creative video content in an effort to further promote Athletics.
Loads news releases onto Harper’s online News Bureau.
Assists the Athletic Director in preparing programs, reports and marketing information.
Maintains award displays within the Wellness & Sports Center building.
Monitors the Athletics Academic Center during assigned working hours. Tracks student athlete attendance. Prepares attendance reports for the Director of Athletics and the coaches. Raises flags, in the academic monitoring system (Starfish), for student athletes that are non-compliant with study hall requirements. Serves on the Student Athletes Success Team. Implements success strategies.
Assists the Director of Athletics with supervision of campus athletic events as needed.
Performs related other duties as assigned.
Educational Requirements: Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or related field.
Experience Requirements: Must have excellent writing skills, preferably with previous media writing experience. Must have strong interpersonal and communications skills with an ability to effectively access and interview coaches, athletes and key college players and advocate for Harper College and its Athletics Program. Must be knowledgeable in or willing to learn photography, videography and basic web management technology. Working knowledge of athletics and athletics statistics desirable; must be willing to learn NJCAA rules and regulations as they pertain to athletics communications.
