Work Conditions: Works indoors with hazardous chemicals. Work involves moving throughout the laboratories in an area with an outside perimeter of nearly an eighth of a mile and occasionally climbing ladders. Work may also involve lifting of containers up to 40 lbs. and moving compressed gas cylinders.
Duties of Position:
Assists Chemical Hygiene Officer in monitoring health, safety and storage issues with respect to: lab instruction, evaluating hazards, and assessing risks in procedures and supplies used in laboratory experiments. Helps maintain a file of Safety Data Sheets and other appropriate safety documentation.
Gathers materials (chemicals, supplies, equipment) required for student laboratory classes and provides these materials for instructors to set up student laboratory experiments. Replenishes chemicals, consumables and other supplies for ongoing experiments. Ensures function of instrumentation used in student experiments. Cleans equipment and replenishes chemical solutions and supplies upon completion of experiments, replaces equipment in proper storage locations. Notes any supplies or chemicals that need to be ordered.
Provides technical support to the chemistry faculty including the preparation, distribution, storage and inventory of supplies and materials, and maintenance and calibration of instrumentation and equipment.
Prepares chemical reagents, solutions, and other needed supplies and equipment. Maintains an inventory of the locations of all supplies and equipment.
Assists chemistry faculty members and students with instrumentation and equipment during laboratory sessions. Provides brief laboratory supervision when an instructor must leave the laboratory room.
Assists faculty with the use of demo equipment.
Collects chemical laboratory wastes and disposes them according to procedure. Cleans up spilled chemicals in laboratories and properly disposes of all spilled chemicals and broken glassware. Monitors health and safety issues in the laboratories.
Maintains the laboratories, stockrooms, prep room, instrumentation room and storage rooms in orderly and neat condition by cleaning and storing supplies and equipment. Monitors utilities such as deionized water, city water, steam, compressed air, vacuum, natural gas, electricity, and ventilation; reports problems to Physical Plant.
Meets regularly with the Coordinator of Chemistry Technologies/Chemical Hygiene Officer to discuss duties and problems.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Equipment/Tools Used: Utilizes technical laboratory equipment and computers in order to perform the duties of the job.
Supervision: Under direct supervision of the Dean, Math & Science. Receives direction from the Chemistry Department Chairperson and the Coordinator of Chemistry Technologies/Chemical Hygiene Officer. Performs routine duties without receiving instruction.
Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with an emphasis on laboratory skills and instrumentation or a Bachelor’s degree in a science discipline with at least 24 hours in chemistry.
Experience Requirements: At least one year of chemistry laboratory experience including operation and maintenance of common laboratory instrumentation. Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software required. Knowledge of chemistry laboratory safety preferred.
